The Skinner Releasing Technique™ (SRT) developed by Joan Skinner,
is an approach to movement that integrates the mind / body complex
in the act of movement, using tactile studies and guided poetic
imagery. SRT lets us practice letting go: letting go of stress,
letting go of unnecessary holding in our body, letting go of preconceptions
about what is supposed to happen, letting go of fear of awkwardness,
letting go of the belief that we don't have the right body. We let
go of habitual holding patterns and habitual ways of thinking in
order to let something new happen. Eventually, we find energy and
power. We rediscover our natural alignment, improve strength and
flexibility, and awaken creativity and spontaneity. It's a class
for professionals in dance and body-based practices, as well as
everybody else.
Joan Skinner, former
member of the Martha Graham and Merce Cunningham Dance Companies,
began experiments in 1963 that evolved into Skinner Releasing Technique.
Formerly on the Dance Faculty at the University of Washington, Joan
annually travels to teach at Movement Research in New York City.
She has been artist-in-residence at performing arts schools and
festivals in Amsterdam, London, Venezuela, New Zealand, and Australia.

Morgan Thorson’s experience
has included practice in modern dance, ballet, yoga, competitive
team sport and contact improvisation. Her certification in and practice
of Skinner Releasing Technique is an invaluable link between the
physical, spiritual and metaphysical world, always inspiring her
to examine preconceived notions of the body and its form. She teaches
Skinner Releasing at the University of Minnesota and Zenon School
of Dance. She has choreographed solo and ensemble dance works for
the last 15 years and is currently dedicated to the practice and
teaching of improvised performance. Thorson currently resides in
