Freefall
Homage

May 6-8, 2005
Friday and Saturday at 8pm
Sunday at 7pm
Admission $12; $10 students/seniors/artists

Grand themes of love, war, and justice are explored by NYC-based dance company Freefall, whose work seeks physical metaphors of emotional complexity. A motivational speech by General Patton is twisted to irreverently address male bravado and inspirational rhetoric; the dance groove is straight from the Marx Brothers, the attitude is all irony. Elsewhere, a dance starts with Ravel’s Bolero and ends up as a Weimer Republic love story, complete with high heels, cigarettes and kazoos. Freefall have previously performed at The Movable Beast Festival in Chicago. www.freefallltd.org

Weave Soundpainting Orchestra
Sarah Weaver, Soundpainter

Weave Soundpainting Orchestra embarks on its Chicago debut with their new production Primal Entry. Featuring musicians, actors, dancers, visual art, and audience participation, Weave explores unique dimensions of multidisciplinary performance through the experimental collage form Soundpainting. Soundpainting is the multidisciplinary composing/conducting system of over 750 gestures created by New York composer Walter Thompson for performers working in the medium of structured improvisation. www.weavesoundpainting.org

Eduardo Vilaro
The El in Ella

May 27 and 28, 2005
Friday and Saturday at 8pm
Admission $10

Dancer/choreographer Eduardo Vilaro’s new solo performance unearths layers of gay Latino identity and the art of walking in heels. The El in Ella is an exploration of race, identity and culture, which was supported in part by a Chicago Dancemakers Forum award. Born in Cuba, Vilaro trained and performed in New York City before relocating to Chicago. In 1999, Vilaro founded the Luna Negra Dance Theater, since which time he has received many awards for his choreography, including the Cuban Artist’s Fund, and the Ruth Page Foundation.
