Links Hall Dance Classes are dedicated to nurturing
the unique creativity of your own dance expression -- through the
exploration and practice of contemporary dance methods with passionate,
intelligent, and informed artist-instructors.
CLASS POLICIES
Classes are usually open to all participants with at least beginning/intermediate
skills in body/mind awareness (such as those developed through dance,
yoga, martial arts, etc.) Please wear bare feet and comfortable
clothing, and arrive at least 5 minutes prior to class to sign in
and change. Refunds only in cases of illness or injury.

AUTUMN WORKSHOP SERIES: Movement Based Performance

What is the stimulus that will catapult you into
your next creation?
Join local and international artists in creative explorations of
politics, community activism, storytelling, humor, environment and
the body itself. These examinations will act as a leaping off point
for creating original and dynamic movement based performance. Bring
a friend or meet new collaborators on site. Be prepared to dig deep.

Politically Charged Performance,
with Nicole Garneau

How do artists approach their work from a political point of view?
Is it important to control the message in performance? How can art
and performance be used to generate civic dialogue? How can artists
use performance as a strategy for creating the world in which we
want to live? Engage in lively discussion and participate in exercises
designed to generate material with performance artist Nicole Garneau,
whose current year-long project explores the impact of the 1995

Breakdancing, with Risa Tolentino

Risa Tolentino (a.k.a. B-girl Stalls) has been actively involved
in the bboy scene for the past two years. She has traveled to compete
in breakdance competitions nationwide, including overseas battles
in Tokyo and London. Learn about current bboy-isms, get acquainted
with the open dance circle, or find your own style of breakin’
solo. Open to all ages and levels.

to Clown,

Critically acclaimed clown performer Mike Kennard presents a 3-day
intensive clown workshop, which introduces the world of clowning
based on principles developed by well-respected Canadian clown teacher,
Richard Pochinko. The workshop begins with a focus on listening,
and then introduces games and exercises to awaken and encourage
a sense of pleasure, an awareness of one's immediate environment,
and an honest response to internal impulses and external events.
The course culminates with the presentation of short individual

Raising Voices: A 2-part workshop series on Oral History and Performance,
with About Face Youth Theatre
$35 per workshop or $60 for both; $25 or $40 for both for participants
ages 14-20 or 55+
This workshop is facilitated by a collaborative team of both youth
and adult artists/activists, including Shawn Renee Lent and AFYT’s

Saturday October 1: Part 1, Power of True Stories

Community is built on the wisdom and power of true stories: sharing,
listening, and being heard across the demographic divides. About
Face Youth Theatre, Chicago’s award-winning youth theatre
program for gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, queer youth and
their allies, explore interviewing techniques and the vital importance
of true stories to a community.
Saturday October 8: Part 2, Stories As Material

AFYT share their toolbox of experience that created seven major
productions based on oral histories. This is a unique opportunity
to work with a fascinating group of artists to develop original
and valuable material quickly. AFYT’s current production,
The Home Project, is a theatre lab based on true stories of youth
homelessness.

with Litó Walkey and Karen Christopher
a single climb to a line, a straight exchange to a cane, a desperate
adventure and courage and a clock, all this which is a system: a
six-week workshop
Mondays October 3-November 7, 2005
6:30pm to 9:30pm, $150
Litó Walkey and Karen Christopher (both of Chicago’s
Goat Island Performance Group) offer exercises for making, finding,
examining, and expanding work practices and performative material.
Through directives to be followed both within the weekly sessions
and during private time outside the sessions, participants will
focus on their own working practice and on generating new material.
There will be an emphasis on discovering work through the activity
of making it, and participants will be encouraged to consider these
activities as part of a six-week period of independent research.

European Clowning Workshop,

Post Modern Mime and the art of spectacular failure are explored
in this clowning workshop featuring Inside Out Art Studio's German
movement expert, Christopher Hustert. All ages and acting abilities
are welcome. This workshop is presented in conjunction with Bauhaus
Architecture of Performance Workshop - a unique combination of experimental
