RTG
Dance
Moving from Dynamic Alignment
September 16 & 23, 2006
Saturdays from 10:00 am-1:00 pm
Intermediate/Advanced Level $25 single class, $40 both
The form and structure of Rachel Thorne Germond's technique class
is rooted in the principles of Release technique as gleaned from
her studies of contact improvisation, Alexander, Nancy Topf's Dynamic
Anatomy and Klein/Mahler Techniques. The underpinnings of the work
lie in the understanding of anatomical function as it relates to
dynamic and free flowing movement, while stylistically she runs
the gamut of dance forms ranging from classical modern dance to
jazz dance to highly idiosyncratic movement. This workshop will
focus on integrating an exploration of dynamic alignment with Germond's
own particular movement style that has developed out of her study
of Klein/Mahler Technique. www.rtgdance.com.

Rachel Thorne Germond is a choreographer, dancer, teacher, and artistic
director of RTG Dance. Heralded by the Globe and Mail as a choreographer
who creates "highly ironic works that address issues of freedom,
control, sexuality, and identity" and whose "maverick
feminist critiques...have a madness about them that is probably
just right for our times," Germond has presented her work in
New York City at the Joyce Soho, Movement Research at Judson Church,
Chashama, and The Merce Cunningham Studio, and participates in festivals
throughout the US and Canada, such as Philadelphia's LadyFest 2002,
and Toronto's annual fFIDA festival ('97,'98 and 2000). Germond
achieved an MFA in dance and choreography at the University of Illinois
Champaign-Urbana where she was a Fellow and taught modern, jazz,
and contact improvisation. Her training includes intensive study
of Klein/Mahler Technique with Barbara Mahler and with such notable
teachers as Mary Anthony, Anna Sokolow, Merce Cunningham, and Nancy
Topf. She is currently doing a teacher training mentorship in Klein/Mahler
Technique with Barbara Mahler and she lives and works in both New
York and Chicago. For more info see: www.rtgdance.com.
Siobhan Davies DanceMasters Class
September 25,
Monday from 6:00 pm-8:00 pm
Intermediate/Advanced Level $15
Presented in partnership with
The Dance Center's DanceMasters Series
To register, contact the Dance Center: 312-344-8300
For Siobhan Davies, modern dancers are expected to be creative individuals
with choreographic abilities and input. Deborah Saxon, Senior Dancer
for Siobhan Davies Dance (UK) will lead a 2 hour creative process
class beginning with a release based warm up that will concentrate
on finding connections through the body, leading into vigourous
movement through space. This will develop into a task based creative
exploration, and finally a discussion with both Deborah, and Siobhan
Davies herself. Dancers will learn how to use their own interests
and experiences as routes into creating material, along with frameworks
used by Davies during the making of her pieces.
Siobhan Davies Dance Company performs September
28-30, at The Dance Center, 1306 S. Michigan Avenue. www.siobhandavies.com
Joseph Ravens
Sweetly Releasing: Movement, Text and Media
September 30, 2006
Saturday from 1:00 pm-5:00 pm
$30
In this movement and media based workshop, Joseph Ravens will share
his techniques for generating performance material and layering
it with projection to arrive at images that are whimsical and alluring.
Look into the process used to develop Raven’s new multimedia
performance, Sweet Release, a hybrid of theater, dance, and technology,
exploring the relationship between humor and death. Workshop participants
will invent movement and text around images and concepts collected
in Romania by Ravens at the 'Merry Cemetery'. Beginning with research
in rural Romania and culminating in a large scale performance installation,
Sweet Release combines prerecorded interviews and live video feed
to create ideas that are ultimately absurd while at the same time
being strangely accessible. Participants should bring paper and
pen, and be ready to move and speak; no prior training is required
in theater or dance.

Joseph Ravens performs Sweet Release September
21-October 8, at The Storefront Theater, 66 East Randolph Street.
Workshop participants receive a 50% discount on admission to Sweet
Release. www.josephravens.com
