Actor Training with Members of the SITI Company:
An Intensive Two-Week Workshop
One day introduction to Suzuki
An Intensive Two-Week Workshop on
The Viewpoints and Suzuki Method
Mondays-Fridays, July 9-20, 2007
9:30am- 1:30pm
$595
Following a sold-out fall workshop, Links Hall is
proud to welcome back the SITI Company for a summer intensive workshop
in the physical vocabularies and basic theories of the two distinct
methods of actor training used in their productions; the Viewpoints
and the Suzuki Method.
The Suzuki Method is a rigorous physical and vocal discipline, created
by renowned theater artist Tadashi Suzuki and his company designed
to focus the perceptive abilities and powers of the human body.
The training strives to restore the wholeness of the body as a tool
of theatrical expression, while heightening the actor's emotional
and physical power and commitment to each moment on the stage. Attention
is on the lower body and a vocabulary of footwork, sharpening the
actor's breath control and concentration.
The Viewpoints is a technique of improvisation that
grew out of the post-modern dance world. It was first articulated
by choreographer Mary Overlie who broke down the two dominant issues
performers deal with - time and space; she called her approach the
Six Viewpoints. Anne Bogart and SITI Company have expanded Overlie’s
notions and adapted them for actors, allowing a group of actors
to function together spontaneously and intuitively and to generate
bold, theatrical work. It develops flexibility, strength and articulation
in movement while quickly making ensemble interaction possible.

One of the most important aspects of SITI's work
is the teaching of their training techniques. It is through the
dialogue between Suzuki and Viewpoints that the philosophy and technique
of SITI Company is continually explored, revitalized, and articulated.
Participant Requirements:
Prior knowledge of SITI Company's training
and performances is necessary. The class demands physical agility
and endurance and some conditioning prior to the workshop is recommended.
Please come dressed to move (no jeans, dresses or skirts). Shorts,
tights, and leggings are necessary. Suzuki students will be required
to wear socks during class and should wear clothing that shows the
contours of the legs and upper hody (i.e., no baggy sweats). Viewpoints
work will be conducted in bare feet.
Participation is extremely limited and registration is on a first-come,
first-served basis. Registration requires a non-refundable deposit
of $295 as well as an e-mailed resume. Please call Links Hall 773-281-0824
or e-mail emott@linkshall.org
to register.
