Bambara and Kumar are dance artists new to Chicago, from Los Angeles and Seattle respectively. They will show solo works that query issues of gender, power, hierarchy and transformation, addressing concepts of inter-culturalism and contemporary dance making. Bambara’s Ashade (bring together) questions the spiritual economies of possessions and dis-possessions. Kumar’s Unveiling… is a metaphor for transformation and intentional secrets, using the narrative, rhythmic flavor of Kathak.

Clinard’s dance theatre work is rooted in the art of flamenco, incorporating painting and sculpture to create vignettes intended to awaken our astonishment, questioning, grief, and compassion in this climate of war. “Jondo” is a branch of flamenco; it is slow, heavy, and its lyrics are concerned with death and loss. Three artists present the results of their six-month residencies through the LinkUp program at Links Hall:

1) In a humorous diptych, Szewai Lee and ensemble tell a story of discrimination, following it from birth to death. Each performer tells their own story, illustrating personal prejudices with music, words, and movement.
2) Angeline Gragasin’s ANGELUS NOVUS draws inspiration from the traditions of Medieval Pageantry and American historical reenactments to bring a fresh and physical perspective to the intersection of media, mogul, and momentum. A vivid and playful depiction of how these elements can both support and betray a community's history.
3) CCBdance Project’s Ninga portrays the ways that the human body and personality are transformed by the struggles of living in a violent world. Choreographer Christian Bambara asks why people are victims of racism, class prejudice, and indifference that are manifested in immigration.
