Contemporary Dance Partnering: How to Have a Gutsy Collaboration Without Biting Each Others' Heads Off
with
Julia Rae Antonick and Jonathan Meyer
curated by Links Hall Artistic Associates
Rachel Damon & Dan Mohr
This workshop will start with a warm-up addressing gravity, floorwork, inversions, and spirals, then move into partnering skills and compositional tools. We will be focusing on weight sharing and lifts, momentum, rhythm, image, and improvisational scores as a way of generating material. We will also be looking at the collaborative process: how to know and voice your own opinion, challenge your partner and draw forth their strengths, address the value and limitations of each other's habits and compromise with each other without compromising the work.
Julia Rae Antonick graduated from the Chicago Academy for the Arts with the Dance Department's Award of Excellence and received her BFA in dance from CalArts. She is currently a Chicago Dancemakers Forum Lab Artist for 2009-2010.
Jonathan Meyer is Artistic Director and founder of Khecari. He has been a Chicago Dancemakers Forum Lab Artist, as well as a Chicago Cultural Center DanceBridge resident
"As an improvising artist in both music and movement, the events of collision_theory have long been a fantasy of mine. In dance contexts, music is often relegated to an ancillary, 'wallpaper' status. Curating the series affords me an opportunity to see artists whom I admire from both disciplines performing together on a level plane—and to share that experience with a unique audience of dance, music, and improvisation enthusiasts alike. This is very exciting." ~ Dan Mohr
